The Writer's Laboratory (James Baldwin Writer's Workshop)
 

In February 1992, the James Baldwin Writers' Workshop was established to produce new works expressing the depth and diversity of many cultures.

 

Works produced in the Workshop include:

 

  • "A Winter Reunion" (First Prize Off-Off Broadway Short Play Festival, anthologized by Samuel French, 1996)

  • "Gifts of Parting" (National Finalist).  

  • "Eden Street", an original, multi-cultural musical by Susan Horowitz, Ph.D (books and lyrics) and Judd Woldin (composer) (awarded the Harburg and Puffin Foundation Grants). Mr. Woldin's other awards include the Tony and Grammy Awards for "Raisin" and NJ Council of the Arts for "The King of Schnorrers". Dr. Horowitz' awards include: Children's Book of the Month Club (Reading Series), Cine Golden Eagle (original screenplay), Hunter Playwrights (drama). Susan is also the author of "Queens of Comedy".

 

Other projects:

 

  • "Journey" by Herb Martin (book and lyrics), music by Duke Ellington. Mr. Martin's musicals include:

  • "The Yearling" (two songs recorded by Barbra Streisand).

  • Michael Smalls' "Miracle" based on music by his father Charlie Smalls, composer of "The Wiz" (Tony and Grammy Awards).
